by Mies Van Der Rohe
Emerging from Berlin’s avant-garde circles in the late 1920’s, German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed one of his greatest European masterworks in the city of Brno—a freestanding, three-story villa, whose purpose was to compliment the modern lifestyle.
With his radical simplifications and early-functionalist ideology, the architect succeeded in changing the sphere of architecture not only in Czechoslovakia but also around the world. The modern age of architecture was born. The man became a pioneer. And almost a century later the dwelling remains a celebrated icon of modernism.

The Emblem Book is a compilation of images, ideas, and inspirations whose purpose is to capture the original essence and the continuous energy that drives its namesake hotel in the center of Prague. Based in a city with a rich dichotomy of steadfast cultural monuments and continuous modern imaginations, the hotel is a home not centered on hospitality clichés, but on the encouragement of communal and cultural discussion. With this book of curated content, The Emblem hopes to further explore and ultimately widen the boundaries of this creative atmosphere. Its aim is to give life to unexpected and unexplored connections in the world, to create international conversations about the culture we live in, and to inspire all creatives to pursue their passions in whatever form they take.
The Emblem Book’s Creative Director was honored as one of the three finalists for Photographer of The Year during the 2014 Czech Grand Design Awards and has received various other awards for his work.
His pictures are regularly published in magazines and publications such as Dolce Vita, Blue Paper, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, Inspire Magazine, Proc Ne?, Esprit, Wallpaper, Dazed & Confused, Interview, Tank Magazine, and more.
After studying classical painting, Grombirik moved to different media and spent three years studying photography at Tomas Bata University in Zlin. After working a couple of years, his focus moved from fashion photography and experimenting with different medias to more personal projects.
Currently, a great portion of his work is focused on architecture and the combination of poetic details with almost an edge of magical realism. His work is gentle and sophisticated as result of traditional photographic development.
Jan was born in the Czech Republic and is currently working in Prague and Vienna.
The Emblem Hotel wants to thank the following for their participation:
Lissy Von Schwarzkopf
